Sleep is pushed to the back burner at Micandy Gardens

May 4, 2016 / Randy Buist / News / No Comments

The greenhouse of Micandy Gardens is filled with flowering plants at the moment. It’s a very busy period and – as they say on their Twitter page – sleep is pushed to the back burner. Even though the staff of the greenhouse has more than enough to do at the moment, they took some time to take the following video, to show the colorful greenhouse.

Micandy Garden Greenhouses is a family owned, horticulture greenhouse business that is situated in Hudsonville (MI), USA. For 50 years now, the company produces plants and flowers for other greenhouses, retail chains, garden centers and landscapers.

LED Lighting takes hold @ Micandy

April 10, 2015 / Randy Buist / News / No Comments

This winter and spring we have experimented with 10,000 square feet of LED lighting.
In this brief time, we have already seen significant results.

We have seen cuttings take root 3-5 days quicker than without lighting or with incandescent lighting. The energy savings of LED’s is significant as well. One 1 watt LED bulb can do what one 100 watt bulb does.

Here is our mysterious colored LED lighting at night. The blue and the red bulbs make for a purple colored greenhouse.

Instagram post 2197362275273367816_1285004457 How much do you really know about the poinsettia?

It's National Poinsettia Day in the United States. This plant accounts for a full quarter of all potted plants sold nationally.
Since the 1820's in the US, it's typically considered a holiday plant. Native to Southern Mexico and Central America, it's typically regarded as more of a shrub or small tree in these areas.

The flower of the poinsettia is called the cyanthia, and is the little "button" at the top of the stem. The red leaves typically associated as the petals are actually called "Bracts". Bracts can be red, orange, pink, pale green, cream, or marbled. As the light changes, the green leaves darken to almost black, and then brighten to the festive colors we are used to seeing around the holiday season.

Happy Poinsettia Day to you! Now you can enjoy your plants even more with these tidbits in your knowledge bank!

How will you use yours? Dried cuttings? A sensory garden? Or to plant near your doors and windows to "spice" up your day when a nice breeze comes along?

Take this sage advice, call us at the greenhouse, or call your favorite broker to get these added to your spring order.

Instagram post 2192949299975815640_1285004457 We know, we're a little late to the "DECADES CHALLENGE" party. But we're here now.

From the first moments until now, there have been highs and lows, bumps and bruises, laughter and joy. When Micki and Andy began in 1964 this flower farm was a dream come true for two farm kids who fell in love. Micandy has come a long way since then. The greenhouse has raised children and grandchildren. It's nurtured strong friendships that have survived the best and worst of times. It's been the backdrop of a few love stories, and some heartbreak.
There are many changes. It's bigger, there's more people, the systems have been updated and modernized, a lot. The products vary and personnel change.

The really vital things remain the same. The people are loved. The laughter is consistent. And the flowers! Oh, the flowers... they remain our signature and our goal. They are our way to share the beauty, laughter, and joy we know here within our walls with everyone. It's still a dream come true for those two farm kids in love from West Michigan.

Instagram post 2190993691685114066_1285004457 Our tree this year has jokes!! Pretty soon this tree will be decorated and lit, twinkling and sparkling in our warehouse. The laughter will come less from silly jokes, and more from a genuine appreciation of the season.

Pretty soon this little tree will fill with gifts to be shared with our community. We are collecting this year for Love Inc. in Hudsonville. They serve community food banks with desperately needed supplies. If you're out our way, and have non-perishable food, toiletries, or cleaning products to share, this tree will be here for you to gift it under. (Here is their wish list: https://www.loveinthenameofchrist.org/current-food-pantry-needs/) We start collecting right now, and will until January 7. While you're here pop through the office to say "hey" and grab some candy.

Thanks truly, to our neighbors for helping us serve. We're honored to share this with you.
